Full Name

Matt Levine

Matt Levine is an accomplished composer and producer of music for games, film, television, and other pictured media. His unique ability to compose memorable themes across a wide range of genres, his cutting edge technical skills, and his resourceful and collaborative approach have earned him a stellar reputation among producers and directors. From the early days of multimedia, through the dot-com boom, and on to AAA video games, Levine has always advocated for scores that are rich in emotion, drama, and storytelling. His exceptional ability to convey narrative through music has made him one of the most accomplished music producers in the video game industry.
Levine graduated from California Institute of the Arts in 1992, receiving a BFA in music composition. His career started in the mid-nineties when he signed on as in-house engineer for San Francisco Composer Ed Bogas. Bogas served a broad range of commercial, corporate, musical, and high-tech clients. Long-time projects included the Garfield cartoon, The Oakland A’s, and PBS. Bogas was famous for his speed and spontaneity, which provided Levine with a fast-paced proving ground for his recording, mixing, and editing skills. It was common for Bogas to have three or more clients per day, all using a live band, singers, and voiceover talent. As the sole house engineer, Levine took charge of all elements of production, from set up to recording, mixing, editing, and delivery.
In 1998, Levine struck out on his own, putting all of his creative efforts into his own production company: Uncle Vector’s Audio Lab. Over the years that followed, he composed and produced music for a wide range of television, advertising, technology, and corporate clients, including MTV, Autodesk, Intel, Netscape, Sega, Nike, Namco, Hasbro, and Leap Frog. During this era, Levine also produced and/or mastered over a dozen albums by recording artists such as Thomas Dolby, Liberty Ellman, Vijay Iyer, and E.W. Wainwright.
In 2000, Levine became the Director of Audio Production at Beatnik Inc. He managed a team of six editors, and was responsible for producing remixable multi-track content for Beatnik’s hardware and software product lines. The content packs included top name artists, such as David Bowie, Paul Oakenfold, Nine Inch Nails, Britney Spears, LL Cool J, and New Order.
In 2005, Levine joined the Music Department at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and worked there for over a decade. During that time, he directly contributed to 37 titles published by SCEA. He had supervisory responsibility for multiple projects with music budgets totaling well over a million dollars as of 2016. He composed and remixed music for many games, including The Last of Us, Uncharted 3, and Infamous: First Light.
In 2015, Levine joined the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he continues to teach a course on composition for video games.
In 2016, Levine left Sony, returning to his roots as an independent composer and producer. Levine’s role at the San Francisco Conservatory expanded his already formidable roster of musicians and production resources. He is currently leveraging that talent pool to bring world-class production quality to his projects in games, film, and television.
