Born into a family of musicians, Phillip Klassen has been a music enthusiast his whole life. He has studied violin since the age of five under the guidance of his grandfather; who played with his grandmother in the Seattle Symphony for more than 30 years. Throughout his primary education he played violin in the school chamber, symphony, and honor orchestras. After graduating from Redmond High School (2013) Phillip entered in the Bachelor of Arts in Music and Sound Design (expected 2017) degree program at DigiPen Institute of Technology, where he plays violin in the school jazz band, and sings in the choir and chamber ensemble DigiPen Singers. Outside of the music world Phillip is swim and dive coach, competing and placing top 3rd in diving at the state level for 2 years in high school.
Phillip’s composition and sound design career began at DigiPen where he has thus far worked on 9 different game teams. His musical style has developed out of a constant stream of game projects at DigiPen, as well as from his studies in composition. If there were a primary composer that he would aspire to have influenced his work, it would be French composer Maurice Ravel for his mastery of large scale orchestrations. While Phillip does love and respect the classical genre of music, he composes in a variety of genres and styles. Phillip listens to and writes jazz, folk, electronic, and yes, even pop music. Technology has also had an impact on his style as he works with non-linear mediums using middle-ware technology such as Wwise and FMOD. Programming in C, Pure data, and Action Script offered him the chance to create music using synthesis and algorithmic techniques.
Off the clock, Phillip has many hobbies and interests. When he is not attending concerts, Phillip bikes, swims, and plays ultimate frisbee. Traveling abroad in Spain, Norway, France, England, Scotland and Canada inspired a love of world culture and language; now semi-fluent in Spanish and Norwegian. In the summer of 2014 Phillip hiked the Camino de Santiago, a 550 mile walk across the country Spain. Origami, cooking, and film are all favorite pastimes which he enjoys.
