Jonathan Lucy

Bio

Jonathan Lucy, (b. 1994), born in Ontario, Canada currently studies Music Composition and Music Education in undergraduate studies. He graduated from William Mason High School in 2012 with honors where he studied Music Theory. Teachers are Per Bloland and Robert C. Bass Jr. respectively.

Jonathan enjoys writing music for symphonic winds, string orchestra, and video games but will entertain any form of commission. He is currently working on commissions for public schools and universities. He is also working to write music for several independent video games.

Jonathan is a mostly self taught composer. Through experimentation and studying texts like Gardner Read’s and Samuel Adler’s books on style and orchestration, he has created his own unique style of composition. His inspirations to begin composing in early high school were composers like Hans Zimmer, John Mackey, and Frank Ticheli. In 2014, his piece The Pathway to the Stars was honored with the W. C. Cummings Award for Composition.

While not writing music, Jonathan spends a lot of his time performing it. Jonathan is a trombonist and has been playing since the sixth grade. He has performed in a variety of wind bands, orchestras, and choirs. Among various performance opportunities he has performed at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Notably, he has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City twice. He currently studies trombone with Jaime Morales-Matos.

He is a member of the National Association for Music Education. Currently he is working on his bachelor’s degree in music education and is also working as a teaching assistant for the Sycamore Community Schools’ Band Program. Jonathan is excited to continue his career as a composer and music educator and currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.
