Richard Savery
Richard Savery is a composer/improviser, performing on bari sax, flute, clarinet and bass clarinet. He is currently studying a MFA in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology at the University of California, Irvine.
He completed his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance in his home town, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia. He later studied classical flute and clarinet with Alistair Howlett and Jason Noble respectively. Richard has been awarded the Australia Council Art Start Grant (2012), Young Creative Award (2013), HissandaRoar Field Competition (2013), and the IAJE Pat Corrigan Recording Scholarship (2007).
In 2010 he was was accepted into the Banff International Workshop for Jazz and Creative Music led by Dave Douglas.
In his previous Sydney life he performed with many ensembles from different musical backgrounds including Hank Roberts, Alan Cumming, Lance Horne, Zoe Keating, Bob Downe, Meow Meow, and many others. He was also a regular member of the Marianna Ensemble performing ABC’s national radio program Sunday Live, Artsong NSW, Venue 505, Qirkz, Camelot, and Newcastle University, among many other venues. Other highlights included the Sydney production of Jersey Boys, Belligen Jazz Festival and Dubbo Jazz Festival.
He has composed for a range of formats, for a mixed range of media as well as many side projects.
